UruguayNow uruguaynow.com
January 2010Technologies used:XHTML, CSS, XML, PHP
Description:
This was website was designed in a completely different way to all others I had previously made. There is a possibility that this travel guide will be the first of many other travel guides, and that will all share some similar characteristics. This particular travel guide will also need to be updated every six months. Due to these reasons I created the site using XML. All content was written to an XML file. All styles were then written in an XSL file and I simply used a Saxon web server to convert these two files into the pages that make up the entire website. Now, whenever updates need to be made they can simply be done to the XML sheet and the web pages can be regenereated easily. It also means that the structure of the website is stored seperately in the XSL file and could be used for any other guides.
Experiencia Buenos Aires experienciaba.com.ar/
December 2009Technologies used:XHTML, CSS, Wordpress
Description:
I designed this website for a small language school based in Buenos Aires. Their previous website was very outdated and featured nothing but a small quiz on its front page. I redesigned the site using a Wordpress base. This meant that in the future they woul be able to make whatever changes they wanted, especially vital given they are a small business with little IT budget. I also created a facility so that they can edit text on the site in English, Spanish and German, giving them great flexibility.
Parkside Properties parksideproperties.co.uk
October 2009Technologies used:XHTML, CSS, PHP
Description:
Parkside Properties asked me to create a new website for their business which would be expertly optimised for the search engines. To achieve this the site has been economically designed, using a number of key phrases which we feel potential customers may search for. By using text for navigation and headings rather than images it allows for the search engines to better find the content on the site. The use of images has therefore been kept to a minimum with several different images merged into single images (good for simplicity of coding, which is what the search engines like) although there are a number of galleries for the properties.
Kaissara Hostel kaissarahostel.com
September 2009Technologies used:XHTML, CSS, PHP
Description:
Kaissara is a hostel in Trindade, Brazil. It is based in a beautiful location surrounded by rainforest and beaches. As there were so many photos available of the hostel and its surroundings I decided to make these pictures the focus of the site. To do this I created a slideshow gallery function which allowed for the slideshow to rotate through a number of different photos, and also that the slideshow could be paused or continued when desired, or could be flicked through by pressing left and right. The logo was also created from scratch but is based on a carved sign which is present at the hostel itself. I feel the site grabs the feel of the hostel and will show visitors a little glimpse of life at Kaissara and in Trindade before they even arrive.
Casa Carioka Rio Hostel casacarioka.com
August 2009Technologies used:XHTML, CSS, PHP
Description:
Casa Carioka is a hostel based in Rio de Janeiro. I was asked to optimize the website for search engines and performance. To do this I completely overhauled the site, changing the layout from table-based to CSS, changed the use of tags to make the site more accessible for both different browsers and search engines, chose a set of keywords to target for each individual page and ensured that these keywords and the content were both relevant and then finally spent a great deal of time link building. The site is now listed on all major search engines and has strong placement for search terms such as 'Casa Carioka', 'Casa Carioca' (a common mis-spelling) and 'Rio Hostel'. In particular, I managed to increase the placement for 'Rio Hostel' from 72nd on Google to it being featured on the 1st page, a difficult task considering how many hostels there are in Rio.

September 2008Technologies used: XHTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, Joomla, RSS
